A Brief History of Instant Messaging

If you have ever used an instant messaging, you have undoubtedly wondering how instant messaging started and where it came from. It may be surprising to know that instant messaging started just as Brosix has developed to become- a private messaging system sent between computers on an organization’s private server. Instant messaging was actually created before the internet, because it was used on multi-user operating systems.

A company called Quantum Link’ which later created American Online (AOL) and AIM, created the first bare-bones version of IM, which they called “On-Line Messages”. These could only be sent between their current customers.

Modern IM as we know it today began to grow in popularity in the mid to late 1990s, starting with ICQ, which identified users by a unique number instead of a user name. AIM and other IM programs followed.

Now, instant messaging programs are more versatile as ever, with advanced features like video chat, voicemail, and group IM sessions. Brosix continues to be on the forefront of this ever-growing trend on instant communication by going back to the roots of IM- a secure, private communication network to make sure conversations and data are safe.
