Be Careful of what you Say on IM
Do you get the urge to say things via instant messaging that you would never utter in person? If so, you need to watch every move you make. It is easy to say things on instant messenger, but soon enough you will have to own up to it in person. The best way to avoid any issues in this area is simple: do not say something via an instant message that you would not say in person. If you follow this mantra you should be able to avoid any related problems.
Take for instance somebody who is in the midst of a disagreement with a coworker. The best way to handle this situation is a face to face meeting in which both sides talk about where they stand, how to fix the problem, etc. While this is the best thing to do, some people make the mistake of using instant messages to talk things over. During this time, things are said that are taken the wrong way and the end result is the situation becoming much worse. Do you really want to take that risk?
Finally, do not forget that what you say during an instant messaging conversation can be recorded and used against you at a later date. This is not to say that anybody in your office is trying to set you up, but you need to be very careful because you do not want something to slip and in turn get you in hot water in the future.
Never say anything via instant messenger that you would not say in person. If you remember this, you will be able to use instant messaging to your advantage without worrying about getting in trouble.
