Building Relationships Through IM

I know that we have talked about the importance of staying on track when using IM, but I believe that IM can still be an effective workplace tool while still providing a way to get to know co-workers better on a personal level.

I moved to a big city after graduating from college last May, and started my first full-time job. I didn’t know anyone, least of all my new co-workers, who were all around my age and seemed nice. However, since we were all separated in cubicles for most of the day, it was hard to get to know them at first. 

Enter instant messaging. In between asking my co-workers questions about procedures and products, I also began to talk to them about their own lives, asking them what they were doing this weekend, how their recent vacation was, etc. We were still able to finish our work, but could also fit in a way to communicate and get to know each other. To me, this was much more effective then standing around chatting, since we were still working. It provided an important thing that was missing in our work- a way to get to know one another. This actually  made us work better, because we were comfortable with each other.
