Defeat Workplace Time Wasting through Instant Messaging
No matter if you work in a small office or one with hundreds of employees, one thing is for sure: you and many others are prone to time wasting activities. In many cases this includes walking to and from the offices of your co-workers, and/or engaging in long phone calls and email chains that do not serve a purpose. Does this sound all too familiar? If so, and you are ready to make a change, you need to follow in line with so many other companies and implement an instant messaging policy. In other words, employees can benefit greatly from instant messaging as opposed to the aforementioned modes of communication.
Imagine this: each employee in a company of 100 wastes 10 minutes per day sending interoffice emails or walking back and forth to speak with others. While this may not sound like a lot on an individual basis, you will be surprised at the end result. In this scenario, 1,000 working minutes are wasted each day; this works out to approximately 16 and a half hours. Do you think the owner of your company has ever thought about it this way?
How can an instant messaging application save so much time, you may ask? For one, you never have to leave your desk to talk. When you need to ask a question of a co-worker you can fire off a quick message as opposed to leaving your office, walking down the steps, and asking. Not to mention the fact that you can quickly receive an answer; this is a two way street, remember. To go along with this, instant messaging is a real-time communication device. Although similar to email, with the ability to communicate in real-time you have access to a whole new level of benefits.
If your company is putting up a fight, but you know that instant messaging could be a huge asset, present the above facts and data. This should be enough to sway your entire company in your favor!

instant messaging at my full-time job has really helped with our productivity. Because like you mentioned, I would walk over to another person’s cubicle and end up standing there for 10 minutes or more because the subject evolved into something else that was un-related to work. IM has helped up put an end to that!
