Never download an instant messenger from a site other than the developer site. Many hackers and attackers will create their own version of the file. When you download it, you get lots of unexpected extras, such as malware or viruses. 

Use anti-virus software to download instant messenger
Most computers have built in anti-virus software for scanning downloaded files. Firefox, as an example, scans files automatically right from the browser. You can’t be too safe or scan the file too many times. Just keep your anti-virus updated to make sure you are scanning for the latest threats.
