Fight for the Right to use Instant Messaging at Work

Put simply, some companies do not like change. For this reason, they do not want employees using instant messaging and they will not take kindly to those who buck this rule. That being said, you know that instant messaging is a valuable tool and can really help you take your work to the next level. If you are in this position you are stuck between a rock and a hard spot. On one side you need to follow the rules of your company in order to stay in good standing. But on the other side you want to do what is best for you and your career.

Believe it or not, you may be able to change the entire culture of your company if you put your mind to it. In other words, don’t sit back and be told that you cannot use an instant messaging program to communicate with co-workers, clients, etc. Instead, head to your boss and show them the benefits of doing so. Remember, many companies do not want employees to use instant messaging because they have no clue what it can do. They believe that instant messaging is strictly for teenagers, and feel that it has no place in the corporate world. But of course, once you should the benefits you may open some eyes.

You may not get what you want right away. Instead, it may take several months of asking and presentations in order to breakthrough the corporate barrier. But remember, this is well worth the time and effort. Once your company allows you to use an instant messaging application you can then show them just how much this is doing for you. In turn, they will realize soon enough that you were right and that instant messaging can help improve everything from interoffice communication to sales and much more.
