Giving Proper Notice in Instant Messaging

Share

Although instant messaging has been around for a while, the ‘proper etiquette’ for certain actions on an instant messenger program still has a way to go when it comes to setting the standard.

However, the following are some proper basic rules of ‘IM Etiquette’ of giving notice when chatting and connecting with co-workers, friends, and family online through Brosix.

  1. For a long conversation, ask first. Before asking a contact a new question which will start a new, possibly long, conversation, ask if they are busy. Simply starting the conversation with “Are you there?” or “Are you busy?” will ensure that the contact has your full attention and is ready to answer your question.
  2. When connecting via video conferencing, confirm with the other person. This is related to step #1. Ask a person if you can connect with them via a video chat in an text instant message before simply pressing the ‘video chat’ button on the Brosix window. This will help you confirm that the person is capable of receiving a video chat and is physically ready to be see by the other person. (You don’t want to accidentally request a video chat with someone who is still in their pajamas!)
  3. Give prior notice for any other actions. When adding a new contact to your buddy list, acting as an administrator and editing their preferences, or giving the contact’s information to a new employee, make sure you let the contact know first. This is a great courtesy and helps them not to be surprised when something changes without their prior knowledge.

These are common courtesies that any contact on your buddy list will appreciate.
