How many IM’s can you handle at once?

Are you using an instant messaging program at work? Do people always want to get in touch with you? If so, there is a good chance that you have IM’s flying at you all day long. While you can throw up an away message when you are busy, the fact of the matter still remains that you will have to answer these people soon enough.

How many IM’s are you capable of handling at one time? This is something that many people never think about. They are well aware that instant messaging brings benefits, but never think twice that they may receive so much attention that it begins to bring them down.

Most people, no matter how skilled they are, have a limit when it comes to how many conversations they can hold at once. If possible, you will want to use no more than three instant message windows at the same time. Anything over this can get confusing. While you may be able to handle it, you will find out soon enough that you are wasting time and not giving each person the attention they deserve.

Additionally, one of the biggest problems with more than one instant messaging window is that you can say the wrong thing to the wrong person; this is common when you have more than three windows on your screen. Maybe you are discussing a big client with your boss but accidentally send your message to a coworker who is supposed to be kept out of the loop. Not only can this get you in trouble, but it can be quite embarrassing at the same time.

Even though you may be tempted, do not try to handle too many instant messaging at the same time. Instead, stick with three windows or less so that you can stay on track without making any mistakes.
