Instant Messaging Etiquette for the Office

Share

Do you use instant messaging to communicate with co-workers? This is a great way to save time and to stay on the same page with everybody on your team. That being said, you need to realize that you can get yourself into trouble using an instant messaging program if you are not aware of proper etiquette.

Here are three instant messaging etiquette tips to follow at all times:

1. Do not swear. You never want to use curse words when communicating with co-workers via an instant messaging program. Remember this: never type a word that you would not say in person. This will keep you safe!

2. Do not use all CAPS. This is one of the biggest mistakes that people make in an office setting. No matter if you are sending an instant message or an email you don’t want to use all caps. Why not, you may ask? Simply put, all caps is seen as “screaming.” In other words, your recipient may think you are mad at them if you type in all caps as opposed to a more traditional format.

3. Even though instant messaging is a great way to stay in constant contact with co-workers you don’t want to bother others too much. This is a great tool for asking questions, sending files, etc. But at some point you need to realize that you, as well as your co-workers, have other work to take care of.

Do you follow these three tips when it comes to communicating with co-workers via instant messenger? If not, keep them in mind as you move forward. Proper instant messaging etiquette is very important.
