According to a recent study by The Radicati Group Inc., instant messaging usage is on the rise. For 2010, the company estimates that there are 2.3 billion accounts with growth to 3.4 billion by 2014.

Along with an increased number of accounts, it is believed that the majority of instant messaging services will offer more than text-based capabilities. Other popular features include video chat, mobile support, and voice chat among others.

Instant messaging is nothing more than text messages that are transmitted from one user to another, through a network, in real time.

It should be fun to watch the growth of the IM industry over the next few years!
