Politics and Instant Messaging…
Instant Messaging on a Political Campaign
I thought it would be a timely day to write about instant messaging on a political campaign. Aside from technology companies political campaigns are perhaps the most tech-savvy form of employment you could ever imagine. Emails, Blackberrying, instant messaging, and blogging are the lifeblood of campaigns. It is the most frantic, quick paced work environment I have ever been on. Over the past two years I have worked for a Presidential and then a Congressional campaign and on each instant messaging played a big role because everything – even minor things – seem like a gigantic crisis at the time.
This was particularly true of the Presidential campaign that I worked on.
Every single person had an AOL IM account and throughout most of the day we would have six, ten, twelve windows open chatting with people in our department or in other departments. Some people would even be chatting with prominent journalists trying to get them to run a story about our candidate or an angle that would be favorable to our issues. In retrospect, however, it is frightening to realize that we were all using an open network that could have security leaks to communicate and exchange files.
Brosix would have been a much safer and more secure way to make sure that we stayed on the same secured network and I imagine that in future campaigns most of them will invest in enterprise instant messaging. Beyond the security and stability that Brosix provides – I would love, as someone who fundraised in politics, to be able to chat with donors and make them feel more important – and I am sure that our tech team would love the screen share feature when they were walking someone through an issue with the website or working on state specific sites with someone half the world away. The possibilities are endless and exciting for someone who loves both technology and politics as I do. I fully expect to see campaigns pick up on the importance of enterprise instant messaging in 2010, 2012 and beyond…
