Populating Your Contacts List: A Guide For Independant and Telecommuting Professionals

Share

When you work for someone else they have an IT department to decide who should and should not be able to put on your contact list.  When you have the luxury of working at home often have to do without that guidance.  So today we are going to take a look at who you should, and should not put onto your secure IM for business list.

  1. Bosses, or clients contacts: Do-anyone that you need to work with who can change the parameters of your project, give you feedback or otherwise change your scope should be on your list.
  2. Coworkers: Do and Don’t: Do-If you work with the person on a regular basis then go ahead and add them to your list.  Don’t-Do not add every contact in your organization.  Your list will become way too big to manage.
  3. Online friends: Unless you have a friend who is a great resource for your needs keep them off the list.  So, if a buddy can troubleshoot your code for you strike it from the list.
  4. Family: Unless your family falls into category 1 or 2 by happenstance, keep them on your personal IM’s only.
