I am a freelance writer in my spare time, it is a great way to bring in extra money and to sharpen my writing skills. I know, however, that for a lot of folks - especially in this economy - freelance writing and similar pursuits are becoming a way of line. Famous “talking head” Tina Brown wrote a widely talked about column a few months ago in which she described this economy as the new “gig economy”. In the months since she has been proven correct as talented writers, programmers, designers, and the like have been laid off and then struck out on their own to bring in income while either looking for a full time gig or attempting to start their own business.

When striking out on your own everyone knows that you have to put on a professional appearance. With money being invested in projects at a minimum and more people than ever trying to make a life freelancing it is important that you give yourself a chance to stand out.

Invest in a dot.com that you can point people towards rather than a Geocities website. Launch a profile on LinkedIn. Ditch the gmail or yahoo address and launch a me@yournamehere.com email. All of those are no brainers - but what about instant messaging?

Do you really want to message someone from “FairyTalez381″ on AIM? Why not impress clients by launching your own Brosix network and adding them to the list? Tell them you want your conversations and files to remain secure, tell them you want to be sure you are always in touch. Make your clients and potential clients feel valuable and stand out from the crowd.

Who knows - Brosix might be the tool that helps you become your own boss full time. Who wouldn’t love that?
