Protecting Your Identity Online

online securityWith the rapid increase of social media and technology today, it is not uncommon to have multiple usernames, passwords and accounts linked to websites and companies online for any individual who has access to the Internet. Whether you are an individual looking to protect your identity online or if you are running a corporation, keeping yourself safe and your personal details to yourself can be done by preparing and understanding the best ways to store passwords and sensitive data about your finances and yourself personally.

Protecting your identity online with instant messengers can be done by creating a username that is not common or linked to any of your additional online handles that may be in use. When you create a password for any online account for personal or business purposes, consider adding numbers and a mixture of capital and lowercase letters to the actual phrase to deter thieves and potential hackers from gaining access to your account.

Any time you are creating a new online identity or an instant messenger account, be sure to avoid using familiar terms that are relevant to your own life as your password. Do not use birth dates, children or pet names or even the name of companies you may have worked for in the past, as these are simple for hackers and thieves to crack.
