Taking IM and Computer Breaks

Even though most people’s daily work load is done using a computer and sitting in a cubicle, this doesn’t mean that you can’t find time to take little breaks away from technology. Hours of continuous computer use can cause eye strain and carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrists. Sitting for long periods of time can also cause cramping and poor circulation.

So, in between using the Brosix instant messaging program on your computer to communicate with co-workers, managers, and clients, take a few small work breaks to get up and stretch. Do a little lap around the office, go to fill up your water bottle at the drinking fountain, or walk up and down a few flights of stairs.

These little bursts of activity will help increase the level of concentration you are putting into your work and help stretch out your body. This keeps the mind and body active, allowing you to be more productive and break up your day a little better. If possible, take 2 “mini breaks” a day- one mid-morning and one mid-afternoon. These should only take 5-15 minutes a day. Also, if you don’t go home for lunch, try eating in the break room or away from your computer. This not only helps you concentrate on and enjoy your meal, but also gives your eyes and brain a break.
