As a parent, you want to connect with your teen children online. But, this can be challenging – but it’s possible. Read on for tips on how to do that.

  1. Get Net Savvy: Teens seem to have their own language and this definitely holds true for the internet. How are they communicating online? Learn about the slang and instant messaging jargon that they use so that you can participate in a conversation.
  2. Be Yourself: If it feels strange using internet jargon, don’t. Just be yourself and your teen will respond to that. The more natural you are, the easier it will be for your teen to talk to you.
  3. teenagersGet to Know Them: Some parents make the mistake of finding them online to check up on them. The number one priority, however, is to use it as a medium to get to know them. Learn about their lives and interests (books, movies, music, etc). The more you know about them, the more they will trust you with the more difficult parts of their lives.

Instant messaging with your teen can be a great way to get to know them. Just be yourself and use it as a way to get to know them.
