Use Away Messages to your Advantage

If you are going to communicate via instant messenger with co-workers you need to be aware of the many features that are available to you. After all, there is more to instant messaging than sending a few quick lines of text from time to time. One of the most popular features is known as an “away message.” This gives you the chance to set an auto-responder that lets others know what you are doing.

An away message can do a lot for you. Here are three of the biggest benefits:

1. They let others know what you are doing. Are you busy working on a big project? Are you out to lunch? If so, put it in your away message so others know what is going on. This is a great feature to take advantage of if you don’t want to be bothered. And as you know, there are times when you will feel this way.

2. When you use an away message others can still leave a message. Even though you are not available or will not respond, you can still receive messages. Once you return to your office or are available to speak again, you can check your messages and then get back to the appropriate party.

3. You are not the only one who can use an away message. It is safe to say that your co-workers will do the same. If they do, and you need to speak with them, leave a message so they know to get back with you once they are available to do so. 

There are many features of an instant messaging tool, but none are more commonly used than away messages.
