Useful instant messenger Tactics
Everybody is different when it comes to why and how they use instant messaging at work. Some people use this communication tool everyday of the week, whereas others reserve it only for special situations. No matter what, you need to know how to make any instant messaging application a useful tool that will better your efficiency and effectiveness within an office setting.
Here are three useful IM tactics to employ:
1. The away message feature is one of the most used. Are you taking full advantage of this option? Anytime you are busy, don’t want to talk or are away from your computer you need to “put up” an away message. This doesn’t have to be anything much; just a quick note to let others know what you are doing.
2. Use common abbreviations such as lol (laugh out loud), brb (be right back), etc. This is a great way to cut back on typing time, and to become a more efficient communicator. Chances are that you have a few abbreviations that you always use. Stick to those that are common so you don’t confuse the person you are speaking to.
3. Don’t use instant messages to explain anything that is overly complicated. Sending an IM is great if you want to setup a meeting, ask a quick question, send a small file, etc. But if you need to discuss a multi-million dollar account or delve into the finer details of a client meeting, you will be better off communicating in person or over the phone.
