Utilizing Away Messages While Out of the Office
If you are a constant user of instant messaging, it is important to keep your coworkers updated who you regularly talk to via IM chat when you are going to be away from the office. This can usually be done via away message; however it can help save electricity and is more environmentally friendly if you turn off your computer when you will be gone for more than a day.
Of course, this can’t always be done. Some professionals need to access their desktop computer remotely, so it needs to be turned on in order to access files from another location outside the office. When this is the case, and your instant messenger is running, it is important to make sure that you have your away message set so no one tries to IM you when you are not actually at your desk.
Away messages also give other users a good idea of your current status and when you will be back in the office or at your desk. For instance, a status message like, “In Topeka for the day at meetings. Back this afternoon at 3pm” will let other users know where you are and when you will return.
These types of status messages keep everyone in the loop.
