Visual Stimulation

Why do so many people enjoy instant messaging? Because it is so visual.

Instant messaging provides that visual stimulation that we are so used to seeing in the 21st Century. For those of us that are visual learners, instant messaging provides a way to communicate efficiently, creating a great environment for interfacing. Many people are better able to retain information when they read it, as opposed to hearing it over the phone. Additionally, because instant messaging requires instant response, we are consistently engaged in the conversation, leading us to remember more of it than we would if we were just read reading an email or office memo.

Many people use instant messaging as a tool in correlation with what else they are doing at the time, and that effort it takes to focus on each IM helps us not forget the conversation in all the rest we are doing. For instance, wouldn’t you be more likely to remember an IM conversation while also doing research on the web, then a phone call during a casual brief meeting with a co-worker? Think about it.

Instant Messaging allows us to visually absorbed in the conversation, while still multi-tasking and getting other tasks done. This level of productivity is sure to help around any office or network.
