When not to use an Instant Messenger

There is no doubt that using an instant messenger is a great idea in many cases. But at the same time, there are situations in which you may want to pass this by.

If you want to avoid all potential confusion it makes sense to meet with somebody in person. This way, both parties can be 100 percent sure of where they stand and what is being said. There is always a chance that an instant message can be taken the wrong way.

Do you have something very important to say? For example, maybe it is your responsibility to tell an employee that they have not been doing a good job and meeting expectations. As you can imagine, this is not something that you want to do via an instant message. At the very least, you should make a phone call.

Most people who use an instant messenger know when it is time to opt for another method of communication. Don’t fight this. Sending an IM is a great idea, but not all of the time.
