Is IM a Distraction in the Workplace?
One major reason why many organizations don’t want to allow their employees to use instant messaging is because it provides an unnecessary distraction in the workplace.
And let’s be honest. There are always going to be conversations, whether they are through IM or not, in the workplace which are off-topic and do not apply to daily duties. It’s important to note that these conversations are going to happen, either online or in person. Therefore, using IM allows the organization and its employees to utilize the convenience of instant communication instead of relying on email or face-to-face communication, which may cause even more distractions.
Since instant messaging programs like Brosix are so easy to use, it’s hard not to get off track. However, here are some tips to make sure you are operating at your standard level of productivity while still being able to use Brosix to chat with co-workers.
1. Ask the person first if they are busy and if they are available to answer your question.
2. Ask your question in a clear or direct manner.
3. If your co-worker begins to veer off-topic into something non-work related, and you don’t have time, respond politely, saying, “I’m sorry, but I’m busy at the moment, can we talk about this at lunch/break?”
4. If a co-worker constantly uses IM to send non-work related information, remind them that the majority of instant messaging communication should be about work only.
Creating set communication boundaries when it comes to IM will help everyone be as efficient and productive as possible. It’s important focus on the fact that Brosix is there to make your work life easier and more streamlined, not complicate it with distracting conversations!
